The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 从61版相对大胆舞台化的艺术片过渡到了成熟的商业片，把本就存在的社会问题更加尖锐的凸显了出来，这也是斯皮尔伯格擅长的意识形态运用。相比61版也强调了暴力元素，个人觉得这样更好。美中不足的可能就是结局略有仓促，关于“仇恨”的演说被砍掉了很多，缺少了逻辑和说服力。
旧版本来就是音乐电影是上最大沽名钓誉和名不副实之作，而如今除了将其复刻某种老派影迷念念不忘的「年代感」之外一无是处，至今无法明白全篇都是难听的歌居然被某些人认为是经典？
充满了种族对立，女主的脑回路也让人大受震撼。把他当纯歌舞片呢，也不够好听好看。这种思想陈旧纯属虚构的故事，如果没法与时俱进提出新的思考，就别拍了。坐在隔壁的姐姐全程跟唱，我也能理解导演对这个故事有深厚的情结，但好歹编一点阳间的剧情。 女二在女主的衬托下格外美，她的裙子她的舞蹈都充满了阳光。

所以为什么要期待一个业已成熟的电影工业体系去精准还原好莱坞黄金时代的光影带来的感动呢，引导的方向不大对。Ansel唱歌跳舞还真是都不精通。

视听语言确实厉害，一开场就是一个高难度的长镜头，镜头运动行云流水，看得很爽。但是这个故事啊，也太老套了。最重要的是，作为一部歌舞片来说，斯皮尔伯格也太板正了，少了一些律动。。
顶级的美术和配乐加上糟糕的剧情，难以形容我看完之后的感想。生搬硬套罗密欧与朱丽叶却改得相当尴尬，整个黑帮斗殴全程冒傻气，甚至给我感觉他们打着打着就要去练舞室跳舞了。人物行为逻辑崩坏是整部电影走向失败的开始，女主舞会跳了支舞就要跟仇家男主私奔，第二天就要跟他结婚，亲哥被爱人手刃当晚就跟杀哥仇人上床，还跟嫂子吵架，就你的爱情最高贵，哥嫂的爱情就啥也不是对吗？导演用颜色区分两个帮派观感是很好，女主认识男主没几天就开始天天穿蓝色，新时代白眼狼，有了爱情就没家庭的典型恋爱脑，结果最后还没殉情。男主一脸见色起意和软弱无能干啥啥不行。但在音乐方面还是继承了百老汇的优秀品质，哥嫂街舞和tonight都很吸睛，lighting和布景部门超预期发挥，拍摄也很有水准，如果把脑子放空来看，这是部很好看的音乐mtv。
运镜画面都是奥斯卡级别，这故事和舞美实在难以下咽
实话实说了吧，工人阶级的审美已经落伍了，对zjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjkjki 笑死正说着呢，猫过来一顿乱踩，看来她也觉得难看而很生气
烂透了。很少给这么大的导演给如此低的分数，但我不理解的是如此陈旧的故事，无趣的转折，没逻辑的感情线，生硬的舞蹈，难听的音乐，为什么还要拍成电影？
老斯的场面调度驾轻就熟，看下来整体感觉很流畅，火箭帮的青蓝色与鲨鱼帮的红黄色猛烈碰撞，但这个原本就有很多缺陷的故事，在没有火花的两位主角的诠释下更是让人难以下咽。Rachel还是出色的，音色很漂亮，差在Ansel实在不适合来演音乐剧，唱不好形体也笨，完全是种走错片场的格格不入。今年女配非常大概率就是Ariana的了，全场最佳最抢眼。
剪辑调度精准华丽，叙境转换极度顺滑，近年来最“歌舞”的歌舞片，就是两位主角的表现实在令人一言难尽，不知欧美那边为何如此肯定女主的演技……
都说情节太平淡没有波澜起伏，个人觉得这种生活就是平淡的，像温水煮青蛙一样，像不知道何时会开枪的子弹一样。
纽约曼哈顿西部贫民区里有两伙势不两立的流氓帮派，经常斗殴生事。一次西区舞会上，托尼与玛丽亚一见钟情，但她却是敌对帮派头领的妹妹。
让我在两星和三星间纠结就足够说明问题了，哥嫂cp值得所有的赞美，2021年真的不要再拍罗密欧朱丽叶了，男主杀了女主哥哥然后的床戏让我想冲出电影院
鏡頭、調度、美術、燈光、節奏都超水準，目不睱給。第一個鏡頭已經展示實力，絕對沒有毀經典，有些位置甚至比舊版好（最明顯的超越在Officer Krupke一曲)，且比舊版更重羅密歐與茱麗葉的意味。若要挑剔，唯有說大多數角色臉譜化（Talia Ryder只有兩場戲的確讓人有點失望）。電影主題談移民和歧視，而且大大加重Trans角色戲份，在現代電影史中有標杆作用。若來年在奧斯卡最佳導演、最佳美術，甚至最佳電影有收獲我不會意外。
你永远可以相信斯匹堡的调度，有几个单场戏好得让人不忍心打差评，然而实在无法悖逆自己的观感，毕竟这个满含时代局限性的白痴文本和两位并没有什么角色魅力的主角都无法让人信服，看到最后一度恍惚这到底是一个包着comedy 外壳的tragedy，还是一个包着tragedy外壳的comedy，简而言之，不太好看。（同场的一个老大爷看起来看得蛮过瘾，片头福斯音乐出来的时候甚至还做了个欢呼的动作）
两个主角演技太不行了，加上故事本身的问题，就完全无法共情两个人的爱情和一些行为（like男主杀了女主哥哥当晚男女主没有什么心理负担地就滚床单了，不说男主是不是故意，怎么说也是一个杀了人一个死了哥哥，实在是令人不解的程度。以及用爱劝说刚刚失去所爱的嫂子让嫂子共情的那段，也就是故事让嫂子原谅你，而我只能想到琼瑶阿姨：哥哥只是死了，我却要失去我的爱情了。哥哥嫂子的爱自然是比不上男女主的爱，当然选择原谅他们啊ˊ_>ˋ
