The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. “她喜欢他，但他不是她想要的人。相反的情况也会发生。被一个人吸引，却不想一起生活。”“那就没有方方面面都合适的人吗？”“不要期待太高。”//“我们把爱当作商品，但我们也希望商品能爱上我们。”//“你总会找到阻挡女人前进的男人，而她为了绕开他不得不与他纠缠，你会习惯的。”//“我以为我们是一派的，我以为我们之间没有嫌隙。”“两个人无法成为一派。”
整个气氛看起来有没有一点眼熟的感觉？p.s.我太爱汤姆希林了，对我来说就是德国张国荣。中国有太多类似可拍题材了，如果可拍的话，如果用情的话。看的过程中（感情戏）一直在不由自主地流泪，，仿佛自己亲历了一遍。
太爱了。魏玛时代混沌的社会，一切精神都充满了撕裂，正直与道德无法生存。希望拥抱爱情最后却溺水身亡的作家。只有真实才会给人以慰藉，只有真实的慰藉才给人以活下去或者死亡的勇气。
关于理想、生存、爱情以及死亡。如果世界处于混沌之中，那你是做一个清晰而痛苦的人还是做一个混沌而快乐的人？

看的时候有太多话想说，但是结局太让我难受了，反而什么都说不出来。
Just generally a really good movie if you like independent cinema.
电影分享会推荐的2021年新片，长达三小时，分好几次才看完，是一部文艺气息浓重并掺杂了历史的影片，1931年的柏林，炫目的灯光，混乱的政治，凋敝的经济，扭曲的道德。独特的时代背景赋予其意义——萧条之后，劫难之前，世界仿佛在变得越发疯狂；然而却依然抓住激情，于动荡中纵情，麻木、忘记还有燃烧。所有的情感，在动荡的年代，被历史的车轮碾压成一片虚无。虽有深度但不吸引人，不想给四星。
从数学上来说，这是一次零和交易，两个人拥有的金额与之前相同，但善意不会因此抵销，
恐惧和仇恨的声音不能再高过思想和心灵的，人类尊严的时代即将到来。理性和权力不能兼有。
这是我除了上课以外相当有意义的六小时……

4.5 前半部分的才华与狂放一倾如注，迷幻畅快淋漓得仿佛看到后现代版的法斯宾德，中后段叙事趋于平庸，但私心觉得比金熊那部要好，至少没那么装
